Restorative Justice Service Review: 2021 Summary

This year, the Ministry of Justice started working on engaging with participants and provider groups to gather insights about their experience with the Restorative Justice service.

The purpose of the review is to ensure the service is meeting the needs of people who participate in the service, and to make sure that the model continues to be safe and effective for all participants.

Despite some delays caused by COVID-19, the team is still on track to publish the final report and recommendations in 2022.

In 2021, the team have:

  • conducted 41 hours' worth of interviews, which included 10 Provider managers, 17 Facilitators, and 4 Kaupapa Māori providers
  • had 34 Restorative Justice participants interviewed by Colmar Brunton, which included 17 offenders and 17 victims
  • released five newsletters to service providers, and developed and sent to letters to the Heads of Bench
  • developed a survey for providers, lawyers, and court staff that was published in early December
  • travelled a total of 5173km to interview providers and attend project hui.

There is still work to be done on the review, so in 2022, the team will be focusing on:

  • interviewing the Judiciary
  • interviewing and surveying Police and court staff
  • conducting data analysis
  • writing up the final recommendations report.
