New Zealand Crime & Victims Survey (NZCVS)

Every year the New Zealand Crime and Victims Survey collects information about 8,000 New Zealanders’ aged 15 and over experience of crime.

The survey is the only reliable way for the Ministry of Justice to understand the full picture of victimisation in New Zealand as not all crimes are reported to the Police. Without the survey we would have little reliable information on both reported and unreported crime experienced by New Zealanders. The results from the survey will help government agencies to create safer neighbourhoods and communities.

The information provided by the people interviewed is confidential. The interviewer cannot discuss people’s information with anyone else. Interviews will never be identified.

2023 marked five years of data collection for the New Zealand Crime and Victims Survey.

If you’re a researcher interested in using NZCVS data, you can access most fields in the Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI)(external link). Access to a panel of NZCVS respondents who have consented to contact for further research is also available for approved projects.
