Mailing the Ministry, Courts, and Tribunals – important update

People sending mail to Ministry of Justice locations, including courthouses around the country, are being urged to correctly address it to a PO Box number if available.

A recent New Zealand Post (NZ Post) delivery process change means letters addressed to a physical address when a PO Box is available will be returned to its sender, or destroyed after three months.

What that means is that Kiwis sending mail to any Ministry of Justice location must use its active DX or PO Box address to ensure your mail reaches us.

What is a correct address?

For an address to be considered ‘correct’, it must also include:

  • The full address, including the city and postcode.
  • Have only one address listed.

For example, if a person is wanting to send mail to the Supreme Court in Wellington, the correct addresses are:

  • Supreme Court, PO Box 61, Wellington 6011 or
  • Supreme Court, SX11224, Wellington

What is an incorrect address?

The following are examples of incorrect addresses, and would result in the mail failing to reach the Supreme Court:

  • Supreme Court, 88 Lambton Quay, Wellington 6011 (this is incorrect as it uses the physical address, not the PO Box number).
  • Supreme Court, PO Box 61 (this is incorrect as it does not include the city).
  • Supreme Court, PO Box 61 / 88 Lambton Quay, Wellington 6011 (while these are both active addresses, NZ Post requires the sender to list only the PO Box number).

To avoid any disruptions or delays, please use a correct address when sending us mail. You can find the correct postal addresses for each site on our find a court page. Please include return addresses on all correspondence to ensure any undelivered mail is returned to you.
