New resources help victims of crime
A range of new resources have been provided to help provide support and information to victims of crime.
An animated video(external link) has been developed that explains how victims of crime can expect to be treated and what happens during the criminal justice process. The video simplifies a whole lot of complex information and reassures victims that they can get support right throughout the criminal justice process.
Victims of crime and their families now also have access to greater support with the extension of the Victim’s Information Line, which is now available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 0800 650 654.
The free phone service provides information to victims of crime and their families about what support services are available to them as well as information about the criminal justice system. It also connects victims to services and ensures crisis calls are directed to the correct agency.
A new role, the Chief Victims Advisor(external link) has been established to provide the Government with independent advice on legislative, policy and other issues relating to victims of crime.
Victims advocate Dr Kim McGregor, QSO, has been appointed to the role. She has nearly 30 years’ experience working first-hand with victims of sexual and family violence.
The new resources for victims of crime supports the implementation of the Victims Code(external link), which aims to increase victims' awareness of their rights, improve accessibility to information and make government agencies more accountable when providing services to victims.
