Public Defence Service (PDS) Director Madeleine Laracy today congratulated Wellington PDS lawyer Megan Paish on being recognised for her contribution to the community.
Ms Paish received the Community Contribution Award at an awards ceremony during the Law Society's 2016 In-House Lawyers Conference in Nelson on 13 May.
Ms Laracy says the Award recognises the huge contribution she makes to the community through her work as a volunteer while also working as a PDS lawyer.
"Ms Paish has assisted Community Law Wellington and Hutt Valley for 12 years, mainly by helping out fortnightly at Kaupapa Māori free legal advice drop-in sessions," Ms Laracy says.
"She also frequently volunteers at fairs and events, encouraging people from all walks of life to learn about community law and understand their rights.
"Ms Paish is passionate about helping people and committed to nurturing and building the skills of new volunteers.
"She is very deserving of the award and is an inspiration to her colleagues and the profession."
Ms Paish says she appreciates being acknowledged for doing something she loves every day.
"Community law centres do excellent work and it's great to be part of that," she says.
"Lawyers have great privilege and with that comes responsibility. I would like to challenge other lawyers to give to their local community in any way they can."
As the winner, Ms Paish has NZ$2,000 paid to her chosen cause, the Wellington Community Law Centre.
