Justice and Courts Minister Amy Adams announced that Cabinet has agreed to the strengthening and restoration of Dunedin’s historic courthouse.
Ms Adams said the courthouse is one of New Zealand’s most notable historic buildings and Cabinet’s decision reflects its significance, both as a part of the city’s rich cultural heritage and its importance to the region’s legal fraternity.
The project is estimated to cost more than $15 million as expected and will see the building strengthened to between 60 and 70 percent of the New Building Standards. It is expected to take about two years to complete.
The Ministry of Justice will manage the project and will call for tenders in the first half of next year with the aim of appointing a main contractor later in 2016.
More information on the project is available in the Minister’s media release(external link).
