Find out how to apply online for a private security licence or certificate of approval.
Before you apply online

Find out whether you need a licence or certificate. Make sure you have:

- a suitable passport style photo
- details of your identification (ID) Passport - If you are using an overseas passport as evidence of identity, you will also need to file your visa or other evidence that you are entitled to work in security in New Zealand.
- your proof of training and skills documents
- a MasterCard or Visa credit or debit card to pay your fee.
- Check if you already have a licence through the Public register of licence and certificate holders:
- If you licence has expired, click 'Apply Online'
- If your licence is active, click 'Renew Online'

Note: You can’t apply online for temporary certificates or under the trans-Tasman mutual recognition scheme. You have to apply by mail.
Fees
You can only pay with Mastercard or Visa credit or debit cards.
Important tip: Remember what your fee should be when you apply. If you’re charged a different fee, you’ve made a mistake and you should contact us.

* If you apply for a company licence online, make sure every officer of the company (director or CEO) completes a company officer form.
