The Ministry of Justice is urging everyone to have their say on the Government’s rewrite of the Arms Act 1983.
The Government is rewriting the Arms Act to provide for greater protection of public safety and to simplify regulatory requirements to improve compliance. The rewrite is a key part of the commitment made by the Government in the Coalition Agreement between the National Party and the Act Party to reform New Zealand’s firearms system.
From 13 January to 28 February 2025, we are inviting public submissions to help guide the rewrite of the Act. We want to hear your thoughts on what works, what doesn't, and what needs to change. You can send your submission by email, post or through the Ministry of Justice’s Citizen Space consultation hub. Further details are available on the Firearms reform webpage.
Public submissions will inform draft policy proposals presented to the Associate Minister of Justice. These proposals will shape the bill, which will be drafted and introduced to Parliament. Once the bill is introduced, the public will have another opportunity to provide feedback through the select committee process. The bill is expected to be introduced in late 2025.
