Through a Budget 24 initiative the Government has decided to increase fees in courts, most Ministry of Justice administered tribunals, Collection Services, and the fees the Ministry charges third parties for administering criminal record checks. Many of these fees haven’t increased in over 10 years.
There will be a consumers price index (CPI) inflation adjustment for fees in a range of tribunals, the civil jurisdiction of the District Court and High Court, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.
There will be a 10% increase for fees in the criminal jurisdiction of all courts, the Family Court, the Environment Court, the Employment Court, and the Māori Land Court
The changes will ensure the fees the Ministry charges better reflect the costs of operating court and tribunal services and collecting and enforcing fines, and that these services remain financially sustainable.
The fee increases will take effect from 1 July 2024, unless stated otherwise.
