Iwi, hapū or whānau can apply to engage directly with the Crown for recognition of customary rights under the Marine and Coastal Area Act.

What happens after you apply?

Your application will be confirmed

Once you have applied the Minister will confirm receipt of your application and officials from the Office of Treaty Settlements will contact you and the following information about your application will be published on this website:

  • The name of the applicant group
  • The name of the representative
  • The contact details
  • The Interests you applied for
  • The application area

Minister will decide whether to formally engage with your application

If the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations agrees to engage with your application, you will work with the Marine and Coastal Area team at the Ministry of Justice to determine if you meet the tests.
