The Legal Complaints Review Officer operates under the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006 (the Act), the primary purposes of which are to maintain public confidence in the provision of legal services and conveyancing services, and to protect consumers of such services.
The specific role of the Legal Complaints Review Officer is to independently review decisions made by the New Zealand Law Society and New Zealand Society of Conveyancers Standards Committees on complaints against lawyers and conveyancers.

The Lawyers & Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal hears and determines disciplinary charges against members of the legal and conveyancing professions.
